Google's Direct Offer Asset Is Now Being Tested in AI Mode: What Ecommerce Brands Must Do Before Black Friday

On October 7, 2026, Google began testing a new Direct Offer asset for AI Mode campaigns. For ecommerce brands running AI Max or text customization campaigns, this means your promotions can now appear as a "Claim one-time code" offer beneath your sponsored result inside Google AI Mode, where Shopping ad visibility currently sits below 2% for most product catalogs.

What Does Google's Direct Offer Asset Mean for Your AI Mode Campaigns?

Direct Offer is a manually controlled campaign asset, not the same as Automated Promotions going live October 12. You define the promo, the incentive value, and the single-use code pool. Google's AI determines which high-intent shoppers see it and can generate offer text based on your description. The result is an exclusive, personalized deal inside AI Mode that competing brands without the asset cannot match.

How Does the Direct Offer Asset Work Inside Google AI Mode?

When active, Direct Offer creates a "Claim one-time code" option beneath your sponsored AI Mode result. A shopper who taps it sees your promo details, the code, and a link to your store. Here is what you configure in Google Ads:

  • Internal offer name and final URL for your promotion landing page
  • Promotion description that Google's AI uses to determine relevance and can auto-write the visible offer text
  • Incentive type and value (percentage off, dollar off, free shipping, BOGO)
  • Single-use promo codes via CSV upload so each code is revealed to one shopper, one time
  • Daily limits by total redemption value or total number of claims
  • Terms, terms URL, and start/end dates for campaign scheduling

The asset currently surfaces inside the AI Mode product viewer and is expanding to the AI Mode answer section, meaning your offer can appear alongside Google's AI-generated product summaries, not only in the product carousel below.

Why Does This Matter More for Q4 Than Any Other Season?

AI Mode traffic is growing, and Shopping ad overlap with AI Mode organic results sits below 2% for most catalogs (per BrightEdge research we covered in September 2026). Paid sponsored placements are the primary way to appear in AI Mode at all. Adding a Direct Offer asset to those placements creates a conversion layer, a personalized exclusive deal, that organic results cannot replicate.

Two other Google changes make getting this right before October 12 especially important:

  • Automated Promotions launch October 12: Google will start reading your website and auto-attaching deals to eligible Search and PMax campaigns. If your site has outdated offers or margin-sensitive deals, opt out before that date. See our full guide: Google's Automated Promotions Are Now Live.
  • AI Max campaigns now serve inside AI Mode: Confirmed in September 2026, AI Max search campaigns show up inside AI Mode results. If your campaigns use AI Max or text customization, they are already eligible for Direct Offer. Our AI Max migration guide has the setup context.

For brands working with an experienced Google Ads partner to build their AI Mode strategy before Q4, this is the configuration window that matters. See everything Google has changed in 2026 in our full Google Ads update tracker.

What Should You Do Now with Google's Direct Offer Asset?

  1. Check if Direct Offer appears in your account now: Go to Google Ads, select an AI Max or text customization campaign, then click Assets. Look for "Direct Offer" as a new asset type option. This is a phased rollout, so if it is not there today, check again in 48 to 72 hours.
  2. Prepare your BFCM offer details before building the asset: Have your promo description, final URL, incentive type and value, CSV of single-use codes, and campaign date range ready before you open the asset builder. Incomplete setups risk going live with gaps in the promotion flow.
  3. Generate at least 500 to 1,000 single-use promo codes for your CSV: Each code is delivered to one shopper, one time. For a 14-day BFCM window at 100 daily claims, you need at least 1,400 codes minimum. An undersized code pool means your offer disappears mid-campaign when codes run out.
  4. Set a conservative daily claim limit of 50 to 100 during the first week: Direct Offer is in early testing and Google's AI targeting for who sees the offer is still learning. Capping daily claims low for the first 7 days lets you audit which products and audiences are generating redemptions before you commit full BFCM volume.
  5. Opt out of Automated Promotions before October 12 if your site has outdated or margin-sensitive deals: Go to Assets at the account level and find Automated Assets to disable auto-promotion attachment for eligible campaigns. Any expired clearance deal or sensitive margin offer on your site could be auto-applied after October 12 unless you opt out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which campaign types support the Direct Offer asset?

Direct Offer is currently available only for campaigns using AI Max or text customization. Standard Search, Performance Max without text customization, and Shopping campaigns are not eligible at launch. You must have AI Max enabled or text customization turned on at the campaign level to see the Direct Offer option in Assets.

How is Direct Offer different from Automated Promotions?

Automated Promotions (launching October 12) read your website automatically and attach deals to eligible campaigns without manual input. Direct Offer is a manually built asset you create yourself, with your exact promo codes, incentive value, and date range. You control the offer; Google's AI only determines which shoppers to show it to based on your description.

What happens when my promo code CSV runs out?

Once all uploaded codes are claimed, Google stops showing the Direct Offer to new shoppers until you upload a new code CSV. Your daily claim limit slows the rate of depletion, but plan your code volume for the full promotional window before launching. You can upload a refreshed CSV without resetting the campaign or its performance data.

How do I track which orders came from Direct Offer redemptions?

Add UTM parameters to your final URL (utm_source=google, utm_medium=direct-offer, utm_campaign=bfcm2026) to identify redemptions in GA4 and your attribution platform. Google is also rolling out dedicated Direct Offer reporting columns in Ads Manager in the coming weeks, which will show impressions, claim counts, and cost per claim inside the campaign view.
